SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Development Studio – SQL Server Data Tools, built on top of Visual Studio 2010 Core, now take the role of BIDS in SQL Server 2012, and they bring with them Report Builder and Report Designer.
You have the same functionality as previously with a few new features, but the UI has changed colors and appears a bit sharper. Users of Report Builder 2008 or 2008R2 won’t have any issues. This may come as a shock to regulars who started going before 2005.

The new SSDT can be used to create and distribute databases, models, reports, and packages that operate on older versions of SQL Server because they are all fully compatible with the new SSDT.
In the past, Microsoft has distributed the Visual Studio shell used to create SQL Server content types under a variety of titles, including SQL Server Data Tools, SQL Server Data Tools – Business Intelligence, and Business Intelligence Development Studio.
In earlier releases, we received multiple template packs to use for our projects. A newer version of SSDT is required to consolidate all the project examples into one. Other than that, you might have to install multiple older versions of SQL Server just to get all the templates you need. For each version of Visual Studio, only one shell is installed; a second SSDT installation adds only the missing templates.

In versions of Visual Studio beginning with 2017, the tools needed to make database projects are included by default. To enjoy the original SSDT, you don’t have to set up the SSDT Standard Installer.
As of right now, the SSDT Standard installer is still required to construct projects involving Analytic Services, Integration Services, or Reporting Services.
During Visual Studio’s setup process, choose SQL Server Data Tools from the Data Storage and Processing toolbar.
To add SSDT to the existing Visual Studio installation, utilize the Visual Studio installer.

Installer displays all accessible Visual Studio installations, from which you can choose to add SSDT tools. Selecting Install New SQL Server Data Tools will install SSDT with the bare minimum of Visual Studio if it is not already installed; however, for the best experience, we recommend using SSDT with the most recent version of Visual Studio.

The SSDT ISO image download is required for this release. In cases when network bandwidth is limited or unreliable, downloading the ISO file, which contains all the components necessary for SSDT, can be resumed at any time. The ISO file can be used as a drive after it has been downloaded.

SSAS models, SSRS reports, and SSIS packages can all be built off of BI templates. Data analysis software, or BI Design, is dependent on a certain version of SQL Server. To take advantage of the updated BI tools, a fresh copy of BI Designer must be installed.

SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 is compatible with SQL Server 2012 and 2014, whereas SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2013 is compatible with SQL Server 2012 and 2014. Really, the only distinction between the two is the version of Visual Studio used.

You may add the necessary Visual Studio add-ons for your Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services projects via the Marketplace or the Extensions > Manage Extensions menu in Visual Studio itself.
The features that were formerly built into Visual Studio 2019 have been separated out into their own Visual Studio (VSIX) extensions in order to streamline the process of enabling Analysis Services, Integration Services, and Reporting Services projects.

File Formats for the Business Intelligence Development Studio
SSDT can be downloaded and installed without an internet connection for use in places with limited or no access to the web. Essentially, there are two options:
